Man to stand trial accused of rape and sex assault

A man who cannot be named for legal reasons has been sent forward to the Central Criminal Court to stand trial on 27 rape and sex assault charges.

It's alleged he raped one female on three separate occasions on dates unknown between 1-31st May 2009 and on 5th November 2011 at a location in south Sligo. The man is also accused of 24 other counts of sexually assaulting another female, on various dates in 2004, 2008-2012 at three different locations - two locations in south Sligo and one location in another county.

He appeared before Judge Kevin Kilrane at Sligo District Court last week where he was served with a book of evidence. Sgt Derek Butler on behalf of the State applied for the man to be sent forward to the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court at Parkgate Street, Dublin.

The defendant was released on bail on condition he have no contact with State witnesses. Free legal aid was granted to Mr Gerard McGovern and two counsel.
