High tech litter bins considered

The Council is to investigate the possibility of installing high tech litter bins here.

On Councillor Dara Mulvey's request, the Executive has agreed to enquire about them from Dublin County Council which is installing 800 solar powered compacting litter bins in public areas.

The bins can hold up to eight times the amount of regular bins in public areas and thus create a cleaner environment.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council have already installed 400 of these bins and have been named the most Efficient Municipality in Waste Management in a competition entered by 500 councils around the world.

"Are there any grants available to buy them?" asked Cllr Mulvey.

Director of Services Tom Kilfeather told Cllr Mulvey the move was in line with the strategy of developing a "smart city" and he would investigate it further.

The bins feature a wireless monitoring system that notifies the operator how full they are. They would work by compacting litter as it is disposed by the public. Existing bin locations would be used as a guide for locations of the new bins.
