Re-alignment works have taken place at the Carricknagat Bridge between Collooney and Ballisodare and this includes the installation of a footpath.
Fine Gael Councillor Thomas Walsh says the works are long overdue but welcoming to see.
He said: "This is a €45,000 project which includes road re-alignment works both sides of the bridge, a 200 metre footpath including public lighting pots and ducting.
"This has been an issue at Carricknagat for many years and the current condition of the road was extremely unsafe for all road users and residents in the area.
"Since I was elected to the council on May 24th I have submitted motion after motion, liaised with the Roads Department, Engineers and Residents.
"I am delighted that this project has been brought to final stage and the route will be made much safer.
"This is a positive start to making the road safer and I will continue to lobby for the further installation of footpaths on the existing route.
"Remedial works such as scrapping sections of the older footpath have also taken place following my representations in 2019," he added.
Traffic control will be in operation with minor delays expected until the project is complete.
