Sligo has won a Bronze medal in the 2017 National Tidy Towns Competition for the first time ever.

The city scored 301 points, a jump of 16 marks on their 2016 result and the first time they achieved a score over 300.

Coolaney won the Best Town in Sligo, followed by Riverstown in second place and Ballintogher in third place.

Speaking to The Sligo Champion after the ceremony in the Helix, Dublin, Sligo Tidy Towns Chair Peter Tiernan hailed the medal as a "milestone."

"We're delighted, we're building on previous years and the great work done by Des Faul, Gerry Moore and Jim Lawlor who brought us up to the last level," he said. He also paid tribute to the hundreds of volunteers around the county and partners such as Sligo County Council, Sligo BID and Sligo Leader.

Birdhill in Co Tipperary won Tidiest Town.
