Bike hire scheme hits the streets

A Local company has secured the rights to operate a pilot bike share scheme in the city over the next six months. Some 50 bikes have been placed on the streets and at IT Sligo by Eco Travel Ltd for use by students, local residents and tourists.

The scheme, Bleeperbike, utilises the latest in satellite technology and App development to track the bike's rental. "It's very simple to use, just download the Bleeperbike app and sign up, it only takes a couple of minutes and then you're ready to ride" said Jarlath Gantly, MD of Eco Travel Ltd.

The Bikes are also available in Strandhill, Rosses Point and Drumcliff and it is hoped the scheme will be expanded soon.

Mr Gantly said he was delighted with the support received from Sligo County Council and added that local companies could also show support by sponsoring a bike.

There are various payment and subscription options available. There is pay as go from €4 (80c per hour of use), a 3 month subscription is €20 or an annual subscription for €75. Each subscription option entitles the member to four one hour rides per day. There is also a Bleeper Points scheme which rewards members for regular use.
