Admitted to sex acts with child

A middle aged man had pleaded guilty at Sligo Circuit Court to two counts of engaging in sexual acts with a child under the age of 17.

The man admitted a charge of defilement of a child under the age of 17 by engaging in sexual acts between May 30th 2014 and June 6th 2014 at a house in a County Mayo town.

The man also pleaded guilty to a second charge of defilement of a child under 17 by engaging in sexual acts at a West Sligo location between June 12th and 15th 2014.

Ms Dara Foynes BL (prosecuting) with State Solicitor, Ms Elisa McHugh, told Judge Francis Comerford that the case would be proceeding on a "full facts" basis.

Judge Comerford directed that it was a case in which reporting restrictions applied and that nothing could be published which may identify the victim.

Mr Colm Smyth SC with Mr Keith O'Grady BL, instructed by Mr Peter Loftus, solicitor (defending), applied for the defendant to be remanded on continuing bail.

Judge Comerford remanded the defendant to May 29th next for sentencing before Judge Keenan Johnson.

He directed that a probation report be prepared along with a victim impact statement.
