People who use the Sligo Centre for Independent Living can look forward to a more active social life in the New Year.

It's thanks to the funds they've received from the local Tesco Blue Token campaign.

The Sligo CIL was awarded €477 after one of their leaders persuaded Tesco to include them in the local campaign.

"Sligo CIL leaders have been asked how they would like this money to be used and they would like it spent on social activities for the most part," said Community Employment Supervisor with Sligo CIL Maria Pereira.

"We at CIL would like to thank Tesco for their generous donation and all the Tesco customers who picked up a blue token and put it in the CIL box," she said.

The centre was founded in 1996 by wheelchair users Tom Cunningham, Eugene O'Brien, the late Sean Brennan and Gerry McEvoy, inspired by the civil rights movement for people with disabilities.
