'Keep our library open!'
THAT was the message from the people of Ballymote on Friday afternoon last.
A large group held a demonstration outside the town library to try and restore the library service.
Julie Golden-Gallagher, one of the organisers, said: "Overall we are very, very pleased with the turnout.
"We had a good response.
"The latest from the council is that they are reviewing the library service."
Currently the library is open 19 hours a week - Wednesday through to Friday. "We don't have a weekend or late evening library," Julie added.
"From what I understand, staff shortages is the problem. The hours have been reduced already by 17 hours each week."
Julie and her daughter, 3, go to the library's baby and toddler class every Thursday.
"We find it brilliant.
"Louise, the librarian, is excellent with the children.
"A lot of families with young children use the library.
"Not only that but elderly people use it too, it is also more of a social thing for them."
She added that the group will continue to try to stop the partial closure.
"We also are thinking of volunteering at the library, if it is possible.
"We are going to keep this up. The library means an awful lot to us.
"We will keep this up until the full library service is back."
