Sligo County Council will have a key role to play in the area of coastal development in the years to come.
Cllr Joe Queenan made the comments at last week's meeting of the council at IT Sligo.
His motion sought to identify whether Sligo County Council made a submission to the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government regarding the Marine Planning Framework for Ireland.
Director of Planning, Community and Economic Development Dorothy Clarke said the council did not make a submission but they have attended workshops in relation to the framework.
Cllr Queenan said it was a very important motion, given that Sligo had a long sea front.
He argued the council needed to be "on the ball" in regard to the framework given that they now have the opportunity to be involved in areas such as coastal erosion, heritage and other issues.
The Enniscrone-based councillor said he envisages a lot of coastal development within the next decade, and that the council will have a role to play.
