BOYLE MEN'S SHED

Boyle Men's Shed, The Crescent, Boyle has reopened for the following days, Monday Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call in and see what we do - have a coffee and a snack. If you have grass that needs cutting, gates that need to be put up again or small tasks needing attention we are more than happy to help.

BOYLE GAA

Boyle GAA Club is delighted to announce that this year's Social Initiative Trip will be to the National Ploughing Championships. This year it is taking place in Carlow and the club will travel down on Wednesday, September 18, in the club Rossie Bus. Previous social trips to Belfast and Dublin were enjoyable and well received - the ploughing has been chosen this year due to popular demand. We anticipate that places will fill up quickly and encourage those interested in travelling to contact either Martin Dolan at 086 2413529 or Barry Lowe at 086 8545492 for further details and to book places. Please note that this is an open trip for anyone who wishes to attend the ploughing championships.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

A number of host families for Spanish language students are sought in Boyle this September and October. Midland Language Centre is seeking families to host the teenagers (aged 12-15) from September 3 to October 30 the students will be attending classes in Abbey Community College during this time. It is preferable if the host families have children of a similar age. Host families will be paid €1,480. If you are interested in hosting one of these students, please call MLC ASAP at 043 3346832.

BOYLE BASKETBALL CLUB

Our senior men's team are now back on a Friday night. They train at 8 p.m. and are always looking for new members so if you want to get involved come along and see what it's all about.

BOYLE MUSICAL SOCIETY

Bring a friend and come along to our welcome night in St Joseph's Hall, on Monday, September 2, at 8 p.m. Our Director/Choreographer and Musical Director will be there to outline the show to everybody and rehearsals will continue on Monday and Thursday nights for the next 12 weeks. 'Sister Act' will be staged over four nights, from November 20 to November 23 in St Joseph's Hall, Boyle.

RAINBOWS/SPECTRUM - A group for children/teenagers who have lost a parent or significant other through death, separation or divorce. WIDOWS/WIDOWERS SUPPORT GROUP - Support for those grieving the death of their spouse. Starts on Thursday, September 12, from 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and monthly thereafter in Boyle Family Resource Centre. Cost: €3/Donation. No booking necessary.

MUSIC AND ITALIAN WITH MARIE HANMORE CAWLEY - Share learning with people of all ages and abilities. Learn new skills from the mix of music and Italian. So, come along and learn with us every Wednesday morning starting September 11 from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Boyle Family Resource Centre. Cost: €3/donation.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASS - English language classes are for those whose English is not their first language. Starts Tuesday, September 10, midday to 1 p.m. in Boyle Family Resource Centre 071 9663000.

SAFETALK - SafeTALKsuicide alertness for everyone' is a half day training programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Wednesday, October 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Boyle Family Resource Centre. Cost: free.

108th Beltra Show

The 108th Beltra Show will be held on Saturday, September 7, in Beltra Hall and grounds. There is a very full programme of events which include - A Jiving Competition Live Music with Michael Walshe Most Appropriately Dressed Lady and Gent for the Show Competition all-Ireland Gun Dog Championship Novelty Dog Show Potato Picking Competition Bonny Baby Competition Fancy Dress Competition Sheep Dog Trials Sheep Judging and all the usual Home Produce Classes with many more events and entertainment to suit everyone.

A Fundraising Raffle will be held in Rafter's Bar Larkhill Beltra on the Show Night. Raffle ticket sellers will be calling door to door in the local areas over the coming weeks.

Beltra Country Market

Beltra Country Market normally takes place every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to midday in Beltra Hall and grounds but due to this coming Saturday, September 7, being the 108th Beltra Show at this venue the Country Market will still operate but with different hours. You are asked to note that the Market hours on this day will be from midday to 4 p.m. Everyone welcome.

Traditional music classes commencing in Tubbercurry Family Resource centre on Monday 9th September. Flute and Whistle for beginners starts at 6.15pm, advanced Flute, Whistle and Fiddle at 7.00pm and Fiddle for beginners at 7.45pm.

Congratulations to all our members who took part the All Ireland Fleadh in Drogheda and did us proud. Comhghairdeas to Sinead Johnston on the fantastic achievment of winning gold on the banjo.

The monthly Comhaltas session will be held in Nathy Brennans on Friday 6th September, Junior session at 8.30m and Senior session starting at 9.30pm. All musicians are very welcome

South Sligo in Older Times

This is the name of a new book on little stories, events, people and places of South Sligo, covering Tubbercurry, Tourlestrane, Mullinabreena and Achonry.

Written by renowned author, James McGuinn from Cashel, just outside Tubbercurry, it is full of interesting stories, photos and memoirs, and is a must for any family library.

Selling at just €10, all the proceeds are going to the Tubbercurry branch of the Sligo Cancer Support Centre. They will also make ideal Christmas presents for South Sligo natives living away from home. Buy early and often! Available in various outlets in Tubbercurry or from the Cancer Support centre in Ard Aisling.

Famine Graveyard mass

There was a great turn out at the Famine graveyard Mass which was celebrated in memory of those who died in Tubbercurry as a result of the famine in the 1840's. A word of thanks to everyone who attended the mass and a special word of thanks to the committee who keep the graveyard and its environs in top condition.

Cloonacool Players

The Cloonacool Players Drama Group are offering lighting and sound courses to all those interested in getting involved in the technical workings of drama backstage. These courses will be conducted in the coming weeks if sufficient numbers show interest. All those interested should contact chairperson Brid Calvey or instructor Sean Johnston in the coming days.

Nurture Africa Uganda

The organising committee and Jean Gallagher wish to thank all who attended a fundraising function on behalf of the charity in the May Queen lounge. We especially want to thank all who donated money, spot prizes and food for the event. Also thanks to John and Loretto Burke of the May Queen, and Carmel McLoughlin for providing the music. A total of €1,517.60 was raised for the charity.

Cloonacool Sheep Festival

The community of Cloonacool are embarking on a local festival event this September that will highlight the theme of Sheep Farming and the traditions for which the region is renowned. The event itself will include activities such as sheep class competitions-novelty events, and exhibits and displays on the theme. Best overall sheep and... open to all... Pimp My Sheep!

A dance (10pm Saturday night), with music by John Hogan, opens the festival which will take place on the weekend of 21st and 22nd of September in Cloonacool Village .

Heritage Calendar 2020

Cloonacool Heritage are creating a 2020 calendar with a view to collecting and presenting historical images of the parish. They are requesting that anyone in the area who might have such old photographs to forward them for inclusion in the calendar. Photographs will be scanned and returned.
