Gurteen

Recent deaths

THE death took place at his residence on July 24 of Tom Finn, Slievemore, Cloontia in his 101st year - he had celebrated his 100th birthday just a few months ago. he was father - in-law of Carmel Finn (née Hannan) of Kilfree and grandfather of Ethna Sharkey, Hairdresser, Gurteen. Sincere sympathy is also extended to his daughters, sons, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, sons - in-law, daughters-in - law, extended family and many friends. May he rest in peace.

THE death took place on July 22 at Galway University Hospital of Bridie Morrison Tobracken, Ballaghaderreen. She was first cousin of parish priest Fr Joe Caulfield Gurteen and of Marie Towey Kilfree and Eamon Towey, Clooneen, Kilavill. Sincere sympathy also to her brothers, sisters, brothers - in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.

Concern collection

Concern Churchgate collection on weekend 21st taken up at Gurteen - a total of €390 was donated - Concern are thankful to all who contributed.

Seisiun in Gurteen

Coleman Traditional Festival

Summer Seisiun

The Saturday night Junior Music continues every Saturday in the Coleman Centre, Gurteen at 8.30 p.m. - this is a popular event every year and is hosted by well known musician Fiona Doherty. All levels of skill will be appreciated and encouraged. All are welcome - refreshments are served at the interval. Always a great nights entertainment.

Garland Sunday

Well done to all involved in the organising of all parish events, associated with Garland Sunday. There was a fantastic turn out.

Months and months of hard work (and expense) go into organising these events and the Parish was blessed with the weather, attracting large numbers to attend.

Thank you to everyone the turned out or contributed in any way.

Kingstone Holy Well

A new seating area is now in place for anyone attending Kingstone Holy Well. Thank you to Pat Ward for organising this.

Michael Cosgrove deserves much praise for his ongoing voluntary efforts in maintaining the Holy Well, in its beautiful condition.

Fr. Gabriel's Silver Jubilee

Thank you to everyone that contributed in anyway to our parish celebrations last Sunday evening, honouring 25 years since Fr. Gabriels ordination to the Priesthood. We wish him many more years peace, happiness and an ongoing strong spiritual faith, in his role as a Priest and thank him for all his efforts on behalf of our Parish since being appointed to it in 2013. We thank God for fact that we are fortunate enough in these times, to have a fulltime priest in our Parish.

We wish a warm welcome to all visiting us at this time of year. He hope that everyone will come and go safely to and from our Parish over this Holiday period.

Easkey Dromore West

Open day

An open day will be held at Kilglass House, on Saturday, August 17, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. This will be a celebration of the built and natural heritage of Kilglass House, Woodland and Walled Garden. Events include talk on history of Kilglass House, biodiversity workshops, and the launch of 'The Critters of Kilglass' - an original audio book written and produced by Tireragh Community Support Ltd. Race night

Western Gaels hurling club will hold a race night on Saturday, August 10, at 9 p.m. in McNulty's Pub, Enniscrone. Horses available at €20 each from any committee member.

Community Games

The Easkey under-13 Community Games girls' rounders team will represent Connacht at the all-Ireland finals which will be held in Limerick on August 18. Raffle tickets are on sale in local outlets to help support the girls.

Wedding bells

Congratulations to Derek O'Brien son of Paddy Joe and Carmel O'Brien, Rathlee and Kerri Shaw, Boston on their marriage in St James Church, Easkey on Friday, July 26, followed by a reception in the Diamond Coast Hotel.

Jubilee/retirement

A special function will be held on Friday, August 16, to mark the Golden Jubilee and Retirement of Fr Michael O'Horo. The evening will commence with Mass at 7 p.m. in St Adamnan's Church, Skreen followed by refreshments in the Skreen-Dromard Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Soccer camp

The annual FAI summer Soccer Camp takes place at McGowan Park, Enniscrone from August 12 to August 16 for boys and girls six to 14 years. Cost is €70.

Lotto

There was no winner of the jackpot in the Easkey lotto draw on July 26. Numbers drawn; 8, 11, 17, 34. €25 winners: M Dunne, Carol Healy, Conlon Clan, Willie Brady, V & B Hallinan. Promoter's prize; Willie Brady. Next jackpot €6,900 and the draw will take place at the bingo in the community centre at 8.30 on Friday night. 50/50 winner; Joan Kilgannon.

Skreen-Dromard

Golden Jubilee/Retirement Function

A Special Function will be held on Friday, August 16, to mark the Golden Jubilee and Retirement of local parish priest Father Michael O'Horo. The evening will commence with Mass at 7 p.m. in St Adamnan's Church Skreen and this will be followed with refreshments in the Skreen-Dromard Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend this evening Mass and Function.

Stokes Lecture

A lecture on Sir George Gabriel Stokes will be given in Skreen Parish Church on Sunday, August 11, at 4 p.m. This year marks the Two Hundredth Anniversary of his Birth in Skreen. Refreshments will be served after the lecture in Skreen School House. Everyone welcome.

Community Centre

The office in the Skreen-Dromard Community Centre will have the following summer Holiday closure dates as follows - All Fridays in August - second ninth 16th and 23rd. The office will also be closed on August 6 and seven. Normal Monday to Friday Office hours are 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily with Lunch Break from 3 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.
