Avalon Centre: Wednesday Welcome Club - Calling all over-50s in the County Sligo area. The Wednesday Welcome Club is a brand new, exciting programme starting in the Avalon Centre in May. The club is a space for people over 50 to meet up, enjoy a cuppa and have a chat in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. You can also take part in a range of workshops and activities-or just watch.

The first six-week programme starts on May 1 at 10 a.m. and runs till 1 p.m. and includes the following two workshops-Sing your heart out, and dance for the hell of it.

Parent/Toddler Group

Our Parent and toddler group is now closed for Easter holidays and will re-open on Monday, April 29, Bright Minds.

Our Bright Minds Pre-School will re-open on Thursday, April 25, Our Bright Minds School Age Child Care will re-open on Monday, April 29, Bright Minds Pre-school operates from 9.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. and the Bright Minds School Age Child Care from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, September-June.

Bright Minds are providers of the ECCE and Community Childcare Subvention Schemes, offering free Preschool spaces and subsidised school age child care spaces for eligible families. A limited number of spaces are still available in our pre-school. We are now taking enrolments for September, 2019.

Social Day Centre

Our social day centre provides older adults with improved quality of life through opportunities for socialising and lifelong learning. It also provides them with a place to engage with their peers and promotes inclusion and integration of older people in the life of the community. The centre also aims to improve the mental health and well-being of older adults and to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The social day centre runs four days per week, Tuesday to Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact the centre for further details.

The programme is funded by the HSE and by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

Seniors Alert Scheme

The Avalon Centre are providers of the Seniors Alert Scheme. The Seniors Alert Scheme provides grant support for the supply of monitored personal alarms in the form of pendants or wrist watches that enable older people to continue to live securely in their homes. The grant covers the cost of the equipment and its installation. The first year of monitoring is free and will be €60 per year thereafter.

Hunger Lunch

The annual St Anne's Hunger Lunch in aid of South Sudan will take place on tomorrow, Wednesday, April 17, from midday to 2 p.m. in the Avalon Centre. Please support.


The Avalon Centre Bowling Club meets every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the centre. All are welcome-just call in on the day.


Bingo takes place every Friday night from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Double books cost €15, single books €10, half books €5 and single sheets €1. There is also a raffle on the night.

Youth Clubs

Our junior club will re-open on Monday, April 29, and our senior club on Tuesday, April 30, Our junior youth club (6-9 years) meets on Monday and Wednesday from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and our senior youth club (10 to 14 years) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Would you like to volunteer at the senior club? Volunteers would be required to supervise and take part in various activities such as sports, dance, snooker, table tennis and baking etc. with participants. Contact Clíodhna at the Avalon Centre at 071 9161836.


Centre closed

MCR Community centre is closed from Thursday, April 18, to Tuesday, April 23, for the Easter Break. We re-open on Wednesday, April 24.

Kids Lane

Playgroup enrolling now for September 2019. Open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. Free ECCE year and subvention available TUSLA registered/qualified staff, fun filled curriculum, Aistear and Siolta programmes. Purpose built outdoor play area. Healthy snacks provided daily. Baby Clinic

Clinic has resumed on Wednesdays between 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. (no appointment necessary). If you need to see a Public Health Nurse please phone 071 9155100 ext 5277 Monday-Friday between 9.30 and 10.30 to arrange an appointment.

Aikido classes

Hall hire

Our Centre is available for room and hall hire at very competitive rates, and we offer excellent facilities for sports, meetings, parties and social events, including our sports hall, changing rooms with showers etc. Our hall is very popular for sports events, and also for children's parties as it can accommodate a bouncy castle. Walking Football

Merville Community Centre in Conjunction with Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership are concluding our Taster Walking Football Session Series at our new astro facility on next Saturday morning April 20, from 11.30 a.m. Aimed at, but not exclusively, over-50s, this is an introduction to a concept that is increasing popular as a social and Healthy activity. Come along and give it a try in a Fun Community Setting. Further info from the centre office.

Astro facility      

Merville community centre in conjunction with Merville United has recently opened a new all weather pitch adjacent to the centre, and limited slots are available for hire. This pitch is ideal for seven-a-side soccer and various small sided games and activities especially for smaller groups not catered for on the larger facilities.

The facility is also available at weekends in conjunction with the main hall for children's birthday parties in a safe and secure environment. Please contact the centre office at 071 9150029 for rates and further information.

Centre activities

Merville Centre Host various activities in the centre hall. Merville Active Age is on Tuesday nights from 7.30 p.m. with a busy schedule up to the summer planned. Five Fist Kung Fu is on Fridays at 6.30 p.m. Piloxing with Amanda is on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. Further information on these and other activities is available from the centre office, or by turning up on the evenings of your chosen activity.
