Around the districts: Avalon Centre, Carraroe, MCR, Merville, Northside Community Centre

Avalon Centre: Parent/Toddler Group - Our Little Buddies Parent and toddler group meets on Monday and Friday mornings from 10.30 a.m. to midday. Parents, grandparents and carers are all welcome. There is always a warm welcome with tea, coffee and refreshments provided. €3 per family.

Preschool/Afterschool

Our Bright Minds Preschool operates from 9.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. and the Afterschool from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, September-June. Bright Minds are providers of the ECCE and Community Childcare Subvention Schemes, offering free Preschool spaces and subsidised Afterschool spaces for eligible families. A limited number of spaces are still available in our preschool. We are now taking enrolments for September, 2019. Social Day Centre

Our social day centre provides older adults with improved quality of life through opportunities for socialising and lifelong learning. It also provides them with a place to engage with their peers and promotes inclusion and integration of older people in the life of the community. The social day centre runs four days per week, Tuesday to Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact the centre for further details.

Seniors Alert Scheme

The Avalon Centre are providers of the Seniors Alert Scheme. The Seniors Alert Scheme provides grant support for the supply of monitored personal alarms in the form of pendants or wrist watches that enable older people to continue to live securely in their homes. The grant covers the cost of the equipment and its installation. The first year of monitoring is free and will be €60 per year thereafter.

Bowling

The Avalon Centre Bowling Club meets every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the centre. All are welcome-just call in on the day.

Bingo

Bingo takes place every Friday night from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Double books cost €15, single books €10, half books €5 and single sheets €1. There is also a raffle on the night.

Youth Club Leaders Required

Would you like to volunteer at the Avalon Centre Youth Club which takes place on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Volunteers would be required to supervise and take part in various activities such as sports, dance, snooker, table tennis and baking etc. with participants from 10 to 14 years. Our junior youth club (six- to 11-year-olds) meets from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and our senior youth club (11- to 14-year-olds) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Physio-led Pilates

Physio-led pilates classes continue on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Contact the Avalon Centre at 071 9161836 for more details.

Carraroe

Footpath at Cuilbeg - Thank You

Cadra is delighted that our hard work is now coming to fruition with the work by Mullane's having commenced. This will eventually allow us have a footpath to the Community Sports Complex at Cuilbeg and will allow our children walk safely to the facility. It will also allow more people from Carraroe walk safely and access the walk that is being developed around the sports fields. Cadra on behalf of the community of Carraroe wish to express our thanks and appreciation to the Rose and Oliver Harte for their assistance and cooperation with the project. We also appreciate the work of Michael Carty Engineer Sligo Co County Council for all his assistance. We acknowledge the grant under the Towns and Villages Scheme which allows this work and appreciate all our public representative for the support given with the project. Sean nós Dancing.

All-Ireland Champion Ryan Sheridan. Beginner Class 6 p.m. to 6.45 p.m. Intermediate Class 7 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. Suitable for all children with a keen interest in learning traditional sean nós dancing.. Annual Spring Clean

Cadra has registered Carraroe for the annual spring clean on Saturday, April 13, 19. Please keep data free and come and give our area a good clean for the summer. More details later.

No Election Posters please

Cadra has written to all declared Local Election and European Candidates to request their support and respect for our community wish not to have posters erected in our area during the elections in May. We have supplied our DEDs and Map of the area concerned. Please spread the word and ensure all supporters are aware. We have already received some acknowledgments and positive indications of compliance with our request from candidates and will be keeping you informed into the future.

25 Card Game

The regular game is each Tuesday night at 9 p.m. in Community Centre Winners were Séamus McGoldrick/Dermot Mitchel. Runners-up were Aidan Healy/Thomas Collery, Michael Healy/Margaret Healy. New and inexperienced players are always welcome. The game is run by Cadra in partnership with St John's GAA Club and all proceeds go to local projects in the community so please support and bring a friend.

Slimming World

Charlotte will provide sessions in Carraroe Community Centre each Tuesday morning at 7.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. and each Saturday morning at 8.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. All current, new, re-joining and visiting members very welcome. For more information contact Charlotte at 087 7987118.

St John's GAA Club

Tidy Towns

We are planning to finish the area on the banks at the community centre, cut the edges on all our grass areas to present in neat condition. We would like to hear form anyone willing to assist with any projects or indeed any ideas contact any committee member or email cadrasligo1@gmail.com.

Lakeview Guild ICA

The guild meet on the first Tuesday of the month in Carraroe Community Centre at 8 p.m. New members always welcome-for further information contact Mary at 086 3755894.

The spring federation meeting will be held in the Sligo Park Hotel on Tuesday, February 20, at 7.30. Margaret from Strandhill Guild will give an update on Dollys Cottage. The table quiz will be held at this meeting three members on each team, the winning team will represent Sligo Federation at the national finals.

The Gempack cake competition will also be judged on the night, we would ask the members taking part in the Gempack to contact our contest secretary Kathleen before Friday, February 8.

The Sligo weekend at An Grianan plans are now finalised, balance of money now due, contact Kay.

Learn to Dance

Frank is looking forward to continuing the great atmosphere of learning and fun this year in Carraroe Community Centre. All learners and experienced dancers catered for at these sessions so come and enjoy.

Dance class followed by live band each Wednesday night in Carraroe Community Centre Sligo. Dance class commences at 8.30 p.m. with live band from 9.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. The Bands schedules are: Tomorrow night February 13 Jason Moyles, February 20 Noel Brody, February 27 Stuart Moyles. Parking: Please use the designated car parks which includes around the community centre. Plenty of parking is available in safe locations. Please avoid parking on the main roads. It obstructs passing traffic and view of people leaving the community centre and church.

Carraroe Parish Choir: Parish Choir rehearsal on Mondays at 8 p.m. in the church. If you can sing and would like to be part of a community choir, please come along. More male singers are required.

Hi-Viz

Cadra continues to distribute free Hi-Viz. We appeal to people walking or working around our community to wear Hi-Viz to ensure visibility in these dark evenings. We have a supply of free Hi-Viz available from any member of committee.

Hall hire

Our Centre is available for room and hall hire at very competitive rates, and we offer excellent facilities for sports, meetings, parties and social events, including our sports hall, changing rooms with showers etc. Our hall is very popular for sports events, and also for children's parties as it can accommodate a bouncy castle. Merville

Astro facility

Merville Community Centre in Conjunction with Merville United has recently opened a New All Weather Pitch Adjacent to the Centre, and Limited slots are available for hire. This pitch is ideal for 7 a Side Soccer and various Small Sided games and activities especially for smaller groups not catered for on the Larger facilities. The Facility is also available at Weekends in Conjunction with the Main Hall for Childrens Birthday Parties in a Safe and Secure Environment.

Community Watch

The Still Dark Evenings and Inclement Weather have highlighted the need check in on your elderly neighbours and relatives in our Community, throughout the winter months. Plenty of hot tea, good meals, and, most importantly the regular chat can do wonders during these shorter days.

Pendant Alarms

Merville Community Centre facilitate on behalf of our Community the provision to eligible persons of Social Monitored Pendant Alarms, under the Seniors Alert Scheme that is administered by POBAL.

The Alarms are now available Persons age 65 or older and living alone, living with another person who meets the terms and conditions, living alone for significant periods of time during the day, or is a carer to someone else in their household. Contact Merville Centre Office on 071-9150029 for further information.

Centre activities

Merville Centre Host various activities in the Centre Hall. Merville Active Age is on Tuesday nights from 7:30pm with a busy schedule up to the Christmas Period planned. Five Fist Kung Fu is on Fridays at 6pm. Piloxing with Amanda is on Tuesdays from 7pm. Further information on these and other activities is available from the Centre Office, or by turning up on the evenings of your chosen activity.

Focus Ireland can help if you are: Looking for somewhere to live, having any queries about your private rented or local authority housing or are in need of any housing information, advice or assistance. PATHWAYS TO MEDIATION - We are running short introductory course on mediation to increase awareness among community leaders and community development workers of the relevance of conflict resolution and mediation to your organisations and communities.

Drug/alcohol misuse
