Avalon Centre: Summer camp 2019 - Week 1 (July 1 to July 5, juniors), week 2 (July 8 to July 12, seniors) and week 3 (July 15 to July 19, juniors) of our summer camps are now fully booked. We will be taking names for a cancellation list in the event of any places becoming available. There are very limited places still available for our Senior Camp on week 4 (July 22 to July 26, 11-15 years).

The cost is €100 per child, with a €20 deposit payable on registration and the balance to be paid TWO WEEKS prior to camp start. Registration at the Avalon Centre between 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Wednesday Welcome Club

Calling all over-50s in the County Sligo area. The Wednesday Welcome Club is a brand new, exciting programme running in the Avalon Centre. The club is a space for people over 50 to meet up, enjoy a cuppa and have a chat in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. You can also take part in a range of workshops and activities-or just watch.

The first six-week programme has now started. It runs from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. and includes the following two workshops-Sing your heart out. and dance for the hell of it. Parent/Toddler Group

Our Parent and toddler group meets on Monday and Friday mornings from 10.30 a.m. to midday. Parents, grandparents and carers are all welcome. There is always a warm welcome with tea, coffee and refreshments provided. €3 per family.

Bright Minds

Our Bright Minds Pre-school operates from 9.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. and the Bright Minds School Age Child Care from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, September-June. Bright Minds are providers of the ECCE and Community Childcare Subvention Schemes, offering free Preschool spaces and subsidised school age child care spaces for eligible families. A limited number of spaces are still available in our pre-school. We are now taking enrolments for September, 2019. Social Day Centre

Our social day centre provides older adults with improved quality of life through opportunities for socialising and lifelong learning. It also provides them with a place to engage with their peers and promotes inclusion and integration of older people in the life of the community. The centre also aims to improve the mental health and well-being of older adults and to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The social day centre runs four days per week, Tuesday to Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact the centre for further details. The programme is funded by the HSE and by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

Seniors Alert Scheme

The Avalon Centre are providers of the Seniors Alert Scheme. The Seniors Alert Scheme provides grant support for the supply of monitored personal alarms in the form of pendants or wrist watches that enable older people to continue to live securely in their homes. The grant covers the cost of the equipment and its installation. The first year of monitoring is free and will be €60 per year thereafter.

The Avalon Centre Bowling Club meets every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the centre. All are welcome-just call in on the day.


Bingo takes place every Friday night from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Double books cost €15, single books €10, half books €5 and single sheets €1. There is also a raffle on the night.

Youth Clubs

Our junior youth club (6-9 years) meets on Monday and Wednesday from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and our senior youth club (10 to 14 years) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Would you like to volunteer at the senior club? Volunteers would be required to supervise and take part in various activities such as sports, dance, snooker, table tennis and baking etc. with participants. Cadra Poster Campaign

Cadra is concerned that some local groups are littering our area with posters and would appreciate if such groups remove them and not leave them erected all summer as this impacts on our mark in Tidy Towns competition. We appreciate all the candidates that observed our request not to have posters in our area which was very successful. We congratulate all elected candidates and extend our sympathy and thanks for previous service, to those that were unsuccessful.

Footpaths & Walkways

Carraroe is continuing to campaign and make application to have funding allocated to have more footpaths on our roads including Cuilbeg, Ballygawley and old N4 to Ballisadare. We have expressed interest to Sligo County Council in our area being considered for town and Villages Scheme for 2019.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

This free provision of alarms scheme has been announced and is available via local groups. Walking Group

The next walk is on Monday at 11 a.m. commencing at Community Centre. Registration is at 10.50 a.m. New Members Always Welcome Come join us to Boost your overall health, connect with your local community and have most importantly have fun.

Keep Carraroe Clean

We say thanks to the people who have kindly planted beds adjacent to their houses which make our area look so well. We also the men who have painted the pillars at the weighbridge garden. The Tuesday/Thursday volunteers have spent the past few evenings cleaning the triangle brick on the roundabout which make our area looking so clean. If each resident picked up one piece of litter each day it would make it easy for everyone.

Work Evenings

Our regular work evenings are each Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30. We would appreciate if anyone willing to give an hour would come to Community Centre at 7.30 p.m. Remember many hands make light work. Anyone willing to pick on their own road is welcome to get involved; we will supply plastic bags, picker, gloves and Hi-Vis. The bags can be left at the dedicated location at Community Centre each Monday evening or early Tuesday morning for collection and disposal.

Lakeview ICA

The next meeting of Lakeview Guild will be held in Carraroe Community Centre next tonight Tuesday, June 4, at 8 p.m.,the ladies will enjoy a party before they break up for the summer. Afternoon tea party at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, in Castledargan Hotel Ballygawley. Gleann ICA are hosting this event in aid of the Mater Family Hostel Fund, who support families of patients like Aengus Lyons. The Lyons Family used this hostel during Aengus long stay in the Mater Hospital. Tickets are available in each guild or phone Lily at 086 8220969 or Maura at 086 8930800.

Your support for this worthy cause would be much appreciated. Wishing all the ladies going on the National ICA trip to Italy this week a very enjoyable time. The guild annual summer outing is now organised; this year we are all going to the Sligo Races on Tuesday, June 18. Thanks to our Social Committee Anne, Breege and Betty for taking care of our social events during the year.

Plenty of parking is available in safe locations. Please avoid parking on the main roads. It obstructs passing traffic and view of people leaving the community centre and church.

Church news

Carraroe Parish Choir: Parish Choir rehearsal on Mondays at 8 p.m. in the church. If you can sing and would like to be part of a community choir, please come along. More male singers are required.

Benbulben Comhaltas

The Knocklane Festival will take place June 21 to June 23. There will be a free opening concert in Jordans, Friday the 21st 8 p.m. Workshops for adults and children in Bodhran/Bones; Ceili Drumming; Fiddle; Flute/Whistle; Banjo/Mandolin and Concertina take place on Saturday, June 22, in St Patrick's National School. Booking is now open. Maugherow 10km

The annual Maugherow 10km will take place on Saturday, June 8. Registration from 6 p.m., adult runners €12, walkers €10 and Children €2. Children's run and adult walk start at 6.30 p.m. with the adult run commencing at 7 p.m. from Maugherow Hall.

St Patrick's School
