The month of May was traditionally a holy month in the church calendar and many families made a special effort to have the family rosary said in the home each evening and an alter was erected in the house for the month. Part of the process also was that the May Flower was dropped at peoples door step to remind them of its significance.
The dropping of May Flowers at doors is nearly a thing of the past in many areas except in Tubbercurry town centre. One lady and her family continue with the tradition and when people in Tubbercurry town centre went to their front door on the morning of May 1 last there was a small beautiful bunch of flowers left on the ground. This is a lovely tradition and thank you to those responsible. We know it is not easy for you collecting wild flowers and delivering them. Mile Buiochas.
Michael Brennan R.I.P.
The sudden death occurred recently of Michael Brennan, late of the Nest, Tubbercurry and originally from Carrowreagh Cooper. Aged 37, Michael was well known in the South Sligo and Tubbercurry areas as is his family. Michael was a happy go lucky and easy going, who was always prepared to help and volunteer when needed.
He worked regularly with his father Johnny in the farm contracting work and on any given day he could be seen on the road with tractor either spreading slurry or wrapping and moving silage bales. All the farmers of South Sligo knew Michael through this work.
Michael was closely associated with the Real Tubber soccer team and was their kit man over the last few years, looking after the jerseys and footballs. He also loved to officiate as linesman when called upon. All the young lads and men who played with Real knew and had great respect for Michael. He teased and commented appropriately on performances of the players.
Michael was also to the fore during the Old Fair Day Festival in August each year, helping to do the multitude of tasks necessary - erecting stage, and stalls, placing barriers, stewarding and cleaning up afterwards. He never complained and always enjoyed the camaraderie associated with the Old Fair Day. He also liked to help out in a number of the local pubs when weekends were busy, doing work behind the scenes to enhance the enjoyment of the pub clientele. He was a favourite of all the local bar men, and he will be missed.
Michael's remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home prior to removal to the Church of St John Evangelist, Tubbercurry. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetary, and the numbers that attended his funeral were testimony to the esteem in which this young man was held by the various generations around Tubbercurry. He is survived by his heart broken parents Johnny and Christina, sisters Laura and Lyndsay, brothers Patrick and Richard, in-laws, nephew, niece, aunts, uncles, cousins and large circle of friends all to whom the sympathy of the entire community is extended. May he rest in Peace.
Good Luck to Breda McSteen Brennan of Barry's Pharmacy as she is nominated for a Pharmacy Technician of the year Award 2019 in Dublin on May 18 next.
