Italian Society back from trip
The Sligo Italian Society, Amicizia, had their annual trip to Italy and Modena was the city chosen this year.
Modena, which is situated on the south side of the Po Valley, is a city known as the birthplace of Pavarotti but it is also famous for its Balsamic vinegar and for the manufacture of Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini cars.
The group described it as a beautiful city, easy to explore with friendly people. The Language school Romanica was situated in the Centro Storico as was their hotel. Members were divided into groups based on a test done before the trip so each person felt they were in the right group.
After the classes members were free to go sight-seeing or soak up the atmosphere. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra gave a concert at the Teatro Pavarotti during that week.
Maureen Taylor said they were lucky to get tickets to this prestigious event. She also mentioned a charming and evocative recital given by young sopranos and classical guitarists in the municipal building housing historical archives.
The group enjoyed a walking tour of the city, another afternoon was spent at the Malpighi farm where, over the years its recipe for Balsamic vinegar was perfected to make the condiment known the world over. John Coleman said: "The visit was an eye-opener - to taste the numerous vintages of this unique artisan product was amazing."
The Car Museum was of interest to many of the group, others visited the mountains near Sestola, Bologna, Parma, Ferrara & Ravenna, all easily reached by public transport. During the year Amicizia also had a Film night, an Italian Food night at Laura's of Carney, a New Year's party at The Court House in Kinlough and, in a joint venture with the Spanish Society, a Wine tasting at the Yeats Building with help from Joe Drury of the Wine Buff.
Classes resume on September 12th at 7.30pm at the Sligo Education Centre. Registration on the first night will be at 7pm. Classes will continue over 10 weeks. For more email email@example.com or visit their Facebook Amicizia Sligo.
