Debut single for Gurteen singer

Jessica Farry

Gurteen country music singer Aoife McDonagh has released her debut single, and is calling on local music fans to come and be part of the video to go along with it.

Aoife was the winner of last year's 'Cowboys & Heroes' 'country star' competition.

Her debut single 'Go Down Swingin'' has just been released, and the adjoining video will be recorded at this year's festival in Drumcoura, close to Ballinamore.

Part of her prize for winning the competition was the opportunity to record a single and video.

"That's a result of me winning Cowboys & Heroes last year. Part of the prize was that I would get to record a single," Aoife explained to The Sligo Champion.

"So this is my debut single. It's an old American swing song. It's really lively and it's something different. I wanted to go for something different.

"I've had a really good response so far. It's been played on local radio, on radio in the UK and even in Kentucky. It's getting a great response.

"We're going to record the video to go with my single at 'Cowboys and Heroes because I will be on stage singing at that. So I'd encourage people to come along. We'd like as many people as possible there, and it'd be nice if there were familiar faces."

Aoife took her time choosing the right single for her.

"It took a long time because I wanted something different, even though it's a gamble. The musicians playing with me are top notch musicians. One used to be in Dolly Parton's band. The bass player, James Blennerhassett, is also from Sligo."

Since winning the competition, Aoife's career has gone to the next level, and she has found herself extremely busy playing gigs on a regular basis with her band.

"We'll be playing as support for Jimmy Buckley later in the year. I'll be at the Grange Show and then I play in Sligo town most weeks in the Harp Tavern and the Southern Hotel.

"So I've a few exciting things coming up. It's great, I've had a lot of phone calls and journalists ringing me so chat about the song."
