sligochampion is one of the largest online retailers in the United States of America with its European headquarters in Sligo, employing almost 100 software engineers who create and support the technologies behind the online store.

The Covid19 lockdown stopped a lot of activities over the past year, but it didn’t stop the Overstock Transition Year programme. Twelve students from the local community recently experienced life as a software developer for a week. Each student remotely joined a development team to experience first-hand what software engineers do on a daily basis. Using the latest technologies the students developed an app from scratch over a five day period. The purpose of this programme is to engage and educate secondary school students on what a career in the IT sector entails, and to ultimately encourage more students to pursue STEM careers and in particular careers in IT. All of the participants were wonderfully committed and involved with the development teams and they produced very impressive mobile apps, chat bots and web applications.

They wrapped up their TY week by presenting their work to the entire Overstock office and fielded questions with confidence. With such an amazing performance throughout the week these students proved to be a credit to their families and their schools. Students who took part were Saoirse Connolly, Órlaith Nugent, Ben Cawley, Dylan Barrett, Ella Joyce, Éabhaoin Conneely, Sean Keane, Aoibhín Maher, Ava Pastor, Adam Kelly, Rachael McManus and Grace McCarthy. Plans are already underway for TY 2022.
