Cloughbawn saunter away

EEW All-County Hurling League Division 2: Cloughbawn 1-21 Taghmon-Camross 0-11

Cloughbawn sauntered away in the second-half against Taghmon-Camross on Thursday to pick up their maiden EEW All-County Hurling League Division 2 victory of the season.

After drawing their opener with Buffers Alley, the hosts were under pressure at the break, with the New Ross District side leading by a point (0-8 to 0-7).

However, after a shrill dressing down at the interval, Cloughbawn were a different side after the re-start and powered clear.

It was one of those typical, nice and uneventful league games in the first period, with intensity levels at moderate and tempers low.

The visitors had an impressive victory over Askamore in their opening league game and took that kind of form into the early exchanges.

They led by 0-3 to 0-2 after 13 minutes of playing down the hill with Michael O'Gorman, Adam Sinnott and Stephen O'Gorman all on target.

However, Cloughbawn kicked into gear for a while, notching five of the next six scores to take a three-point lead.

Both midfielders were on target for the hosts, as M.J. Furlong registered a brace and Bob Whitty started to find his range as Cloughbawn eased clear. Yet they lost their momentum in the final ten minutes of the half and Taghmon-Camross got on top.

Chris Cullen hit a couple of frees in that spell but it was Luke Sinnott who lightened the mood of the evening.

He took and scored a '65 from his own '65 in the 24th minute, and was tipped off about his error before taking another two minutes later and proceeding to miss from the correct spot.

The second-half was a different story altogether, as it quickly became a Cloughbawn procession. Taghmon-Camross scored just three points in the period and were on the back-foot throughout the 30 minutes.

The home side spread the scores around pretty well but Whitty did swat five in the half, Barry and Alan Carton clipped over a brace apiece, and Paul Foley registered three, including a classy score from a line ball.

Just before the end, veteran M.J. Furlong broke through to net the game's only goal which was probably a little harsh on the visitors overall.

Cloughbawn make the journey to Cushinstown this weekend, while Taghmon-Camross are in action seven days later against Blackwater.
