Students to shine at piano festival

The New Ross Piano Festival is not only for adults and this year up to 25 children and teenagers will take to the ivories in a performance on Wednesday, September 25.

The concert is one of several events targeted for younger people. This week is the last call for piano teachers who wish to put forward students for the important South East Young Pianist concert performance. Contact Olive Thorpe at olivethorpe@eircom.net. Second-level music students will also get an invitation to attend a free talk and concert given by young Irish/German pianist, Clara Seigle on Friday, September 27, in St Mary's Church. And New Ross Library will have a pianist, Sinead Crowley, chatting to primary school students and introducing them to the piano.

At a slightly more advanced level, there will be a masterclass that the public can attend with Daria van den Bercken and two advanced students on Saturday, September 28.

One young pianist has gotten the chance to go to a summer school run by the famous pianist Lang Lang, and make a professional CD in Switzerland from such a masterclass thanks to the festival.

The 14th New Ross Piano Festival, which was launched in August, will see pianists and other musicians from around Ireland and the world perform at venues throughout the town.

PLAY ME pianos are available in public spaces for anyone to play and every year the standard is raised.
