The fire service for the New Ross district has been bolstered with the purchase of a special water supply tank.

Costing around €100,000 the water tank arrived last week.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ray Murphy said: 'It has upped the resources we have for the New Ross district and will be particularly useful in small rural communities where there wouldn't be any hydrants and where water would be in short supply.'

He said water supply falls off the further you move from a town like New Ross into the country.

'This water tank will improve our capacity of fire fighting in rural areas and has capacity for around 8,000 litres,' Mr Murphy said.

The station, which is manned buy 14 firemen, has two fire tenders and an emergency response vehicle.

Plans to open a new fire station at Hewittsland beside the recycling centre are being advanced and the sod is due to be turned later this year.
