Thieves trigger chaos in Tesco
The attempted theft of thousands of euro from the cash office in Tesco on Friday meant shoppers had to face into unprecedented queues for the self-service tills.
A garda spokesperson said the attempted burglary took place either late on Thursday night or in the early hours of Friday morning. 'Two men tried to enter the premises through the rear delivery door, which they forced open. They attempted to gain access to the cash office. Nothing was taken,' the spokesperson said.
The burglars activated the alarm and their movements were captured by CCTV. New Ross gardaí arrived in numbers and sealed off the cash room to carry out a forensic investigation, meaning no cash could be brought to the tills.
Traditionally a busy shopping day, Tesco was packed on Friday morning, with staff having to deal with some stressed shoppers.
The tills remained closed for much of the morning and staff were kept busy helping out and trying to keep customers moving as fast as possible to reduce the queues.
The garda spokesperson said enquiries are ongoing into the matter.
