THE CURIOUS children of Donard National School bet off competition from schools across the country recently to win a coveted national award in the Inland Fisheries Ireland 'Something Fishy' competition.

The fifth and sixth class pupils of Donard NS received the award for their entry 'Something Fishy - the Musical'. At the prize giving ceremony at the Wexford Education Centre in Enniscorthy, Wexford footballer Brian Malone presented the school and children with their awards. The entertaining musical includes songs and dances about fish life in the local Boro River; the causes of pollution and rehabilitation, and the role of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Some 160 schools took part in the 'Something Fishy' initiative this year. It is based on the life cycle of salmon and gets students to explore, water, fish, fish stocks, angling, conservation of rivers and lakes and fish as part of the food chain. As well as class based work, Fishery officers take students into the 'field' to get hands on experience of their work.
