Quality social houses on the way promise
The hundreds of people waiting for a social house in the New Ross district have been reassured that they will get high quality houses.
Following a query made by Cllr Oisin O'Connell at the December municipal council meeting on progress in building 28 social houses in Rosbercon and 40 houses in Castlemoyle, Cllr Willie Fitzharris said: 'I think Wexford, as a whole, has performed well. I think we are up there with the good years in terms of our housing supply, as well as the fact they are of a really high standard.'
Cllr Fitzharris said council housing staff have really achieved something. 'The message should go out that people who are vacating houses will get a house and a house of a very high quality.'
Cllr Michael Sheehan sought an update on when a full-time housing officer for New Ross is going to be hired, only to be told it will take months.
Cllr Sheehan said it is unacceptable that the town has no full-time housing worker based in New Ross. Describing the current officer as more than capable of doing the job, Cllr Sheehan said: 'I am not sure we have her here Monday to Friday. It's very frustrating for people. Something is going to happen where there is an incident and someone turns up with an emergency and there is no-one is here and a disaster is going to happen.'
Housing officer Martina Donoghue said an advertisement has gone out for the role, adding that housing officers from County Hall will meet tenants on all issues and can discuss matters over the phone.
