Ken captains Irish racquetball team to European victory
Glenmore's Ken Cottrell captained the Ireland Men's Racquetball team to victory in the European Championships in Hamburg, Germany, over the weekend.
Teams from Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain and Poland competed in the championships and Ken's team beat Italy and Holland, before defeating the hosts in the final.
Two groups of four played off on a round robin basis with the top team from each group playing off for the right to be European champions. Individual competitions took place on Saturday and Sunday where Ken took part in the Open singles and over 40s singles events. Ken said: 'It was exciting to be picked a captain so this is a great honour to have won the team event.'
After a great year and winning many titles Ken ended up winning the National Open doubles title for the first time with his doubles partner Johnny O Keeney from Cork and Ken also ended up ranked fourth in Ireland and seventh in Europe.
He also took part in the World Championships in Costa Rica last August where Team Ireland finished 13th.
