HSE says dialysis unit will be up and running in early 2018
The HSE has confirmed that a newly-built kidney dialysis unit should be in operation in Wexford in early 2018.
The long-awaited project has been the subject of a new tendering process which closed on January 23 with expressions of interest currently being considered by the HSE.
The health authority was forced to invite alternative tenders after Fresenius Medical Care Ltd, which won the original contract, was refused planning permission by Wexford County Council and by An Bord Pleanal on appeal, for a change of use in respect of the former Acorn Fashions unit in Whitemill Industrial Estate on the grounds that it could restrict the future use of adjoining premises.
While Fresenius was appealing the Council decision, the runner-up B Braun Avitum, applied and was granted planning permission for a renal dialysis unit on a green field site at Sinnottstown Lane, Drinagh which planners have described as a suitable location for the project. The land is currently owned by Ardcavan Developments.
When asked for an update on plans for the unit, the HSE this week said:'A new tendering process is now in place from which it is expected that a new solution will emerge. It is planned that such a solution will be operational early 2018'.
