Full backs get full coverage in Dermot's Kilkenny book
HURLING HISTORIAN, Dermot Kavanagh, has recently launched a new book on the history of Kilkenny hurling.
Entitled 'Kilkenny No 3' the book covers the lives of the 14 players who manned the demanding fullback position in all of Kilkenny's 34 All-Ireland title wins.
The project deals with the club, county and inter- provincial careers of some of the greatest players that hurling has known. From Jack Rochford, seven times an All-Ireland winner (1904-1913), to present day medal laden Noel Hickey and JJ Delaney, the career of every fullback who gained All - Ireland immortality in the iconic No 3 Kilkenny jersey is critically examined.
The project is unusual in that it is the first time that Kilkenny's celebrated hurling history has been approached through one position - the full-back. However when one considers the quality and longevity of the careers of the players involved, the approach used appears fitting .
The book, by The Rower author, was recently launched at the Set Theatre in Langton's by County Secretary, Ned Quinn, who welcomed its place in the ever increasing register of Kilkenny hurling books, and felt confident that it would be used as a reference for Kilkenny followers at home and abroad for years to come.
The book is available in New Ross in Nolan's Bookshop on South Street and elsewhere in all bookshops.
