A farewell gathering for popular New Ross priest Fr Roger O'Neill was held prior to his departure for Gorey, after 15 years in the town.

The party was held in the Brandon House Hotel and was attended by Fr Roger's parents and friends.

A large attendance turned out for the event which showed the esteem in which Fr Roger is held as he departs to be curate in Gorey parish.

He was the recipient of a presentation made on behalf of the parish and was given a standing ovation by the crowd gathered at the Brandon House Hotel. Monsignor McGrath spoke of the great service Fr Roger has given to the parish, adding that New Ross's loss would be Gorey's gain.

In the New Ross Parish newsletter, Fr Roger thanked the people, staff and priests of the parish for their support over 15 memorable years.

'I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks to the people, staff and priests of New Ross Parish (including neighbouring areas) for all your support and friendship over the last 15 years and kind sentiments, well wishes and extraordinary amount of gifts at this time of my reassignment to Gorey Parish. In thanks giving the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered for your intentions.

Until we meet again, God bless you all,' Fr Roger said.

The new curate in New Ross Parish is Fr Rickie O Connor who was ordained last June.
