European volunteers create 1916 garden in Clonmines
A group of international volunteers have created a 1916 commemorative garden in Clonmines, Wellingtonbridge as part of an educational exchange scheme funded by the European Union.
Ten young people from Estonia, Romania, Austria, Lithuania and Spain worked on the project in the first two weeks of August under the guidance of Eolas Soiléir, a small educational NGO.
The participants enjoyed a chance to visit Ireland and to improve their language, social and practical skills in an inter-cultural setting while learning about Irish history and appreciating the outdoors and its positive impact on mental health.
The project which was officially launched in Clonmines last Friday evening, was funded through the European Union's Erasmus Youth Programme - European Voluntary Service.
The launch coincided with an information session on how youth and community groups can avail of the same funding opportunity to host international volunteers for up to one year in their organisations and to send Irish volunteers abroad.
European Voluntary Service is a fully-funded programme which covers travel and living expenses and provides pocket money to the volunteer.
The European Voluntary Service programme is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over the past two decades, thousands of volunteers have made a valuable contribution to the Irish community and voluntary sector while enjoying an inter-cultural learning experience.
Eolas Soiléir was established in January 2013 with the aim of promoting non-formal education and volunteering to tackle global inequality. It evolved from Clear (Centre of Lerarning, Education, Awareness and Revival).
The organisation which has charity status is developing a residential learning centre in a farmhouse in Clonmines with a barn that has been converted into a seminar room
