Climate warrior Susan's golden moment
Climate change warrior Susan Breen bowled over President Michael D Higgins so much with her gold look at a climate change protest that he made it the cover picture on his Facebook page.
People Before Profit representative Susan is the international co-ordinator for Extinction Rebellion who staged a peaceful demonstration at Bloom to highlight the unprecedented biodiversity collapse and climate crisis that is currently impacting the world. They highlighted how at least one million species are facing extinction due to human activity. This includes a third of wild bees in Ireland, as well as our most fragile, rare native plants and flowers.
Susan said: 'Furthermore, over 60 per cent of the population of Ireland live within 10km of the coast, and many will become displaced due to coastal erosion and flooding caused by rising sea levels.'
Scientists have cautioned that unless we make the necessary changes to society within the next 12 years, a mass extinction, biodiversity collapse and climate disaster will be irreversible. Susan and other members of Extinction Rebellion Ireland attended the Bloom Garden Festival in Dublin's Phoenix Park to raise awareness of these issues. Susan and a fellow climate warrior were body-painted gold and adorned with flowers and greenery, arriving dressed as 'Adam and Eve'. They were joined by three young climate action student strikers. Together they handed out thousands of packets of pollinator-friendly organic flower seeds and leaflets to the public and called on the government to 'Tell the Naked Truth' about the climate emergency and help 'Save Our Garden of Eden' by reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses to zero by 2030.
Mr Higgins and his wife Sabina met the group with a round of applause and thanked them for their environmental work. President Higgins has since changed his Facebook cover picture and Twitter banner to a photograph with the activists. Susan said: 'We are thrilled with the warm response and support from the president. If only our government was as environmentally aware as our president Extinction Rebellion certainly wouldn't need to work so hard to create the changes needed to address the climate crisis.'
