Mixed martial arts has come to Ross.

Local men Anthony Brennan and John Corcoran, after 20 years involved in martial arts, recently set up New Ross Kickboxing.

Both men are second dan blackbelts in kickboxing and have done courses in meditation and advanced meditation.

They set up the gym with the intention of it being a non-profit organisation to help people enjoy the myriad of physiological and psychological benefits of martial arts training.

Recently they teamed up with Andy Murphy from Team Ryano to introduce MMA into New Ross Academy of martial arts and make the gym the Team Ryano centre in Wexford.

John said: 'Many will know that Andy is a professional MMA fighter and trains with UFC fighters in team Alpha Male such as Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber and Cody Garbrandt. He is delighted to bring this knowledge to our club. In our gym you don't have to get hit to get fit.

'Anyone can train kickboxing and MMA without sparring, but if it's competition you're looking for, you could get a chance to win a medal for your country just like two of our students Alice Cullen from Gusserane and Adrian Jasik from New Ross who won silver and bronze in the World kickboxing championships in Benidorm as part of team WKA Ireland.

'Also with MMA you get a chance to train in New Ross but also can travel to Dublin with Team Ryano to train with big names in MMA and UFC.'

John said by joining the New Ross Academy of Martial Arts MMA enthusiasts can avail of a big network the men have built up over the years with the WKA, WTKA and Team Ryano.

The gym is located at Unit 16, Woodbine Business Park, New Ross.

MMA classes are on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. with Andrew Murphy and team Ryano Wexford.

K-1 and BJJ classes are starting soon.
