An exchange of cultures

By Simon Bourke

The Horse and Hound Hotel received a special visitor last week as part of the International Yoga Day celebrations in New Ross. There to promote Indian-Irish relations, Sandeep Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland, met with Cathaoirleach John Fleming and exchanged gifts with local community members before taking part in a yoga class given by local teacher, Tania Murphy.

'He was very nice, very down to earth, and very into promoting yoga as much as possible. We were really delighted to have him here,' Tania said. Mr. Kumar who was appointed Ambassador in November 2018, met the Cathaoirleach and Members of New Ross Municipal District as well as Officials from the District and Myles Courtney from New Ross Street Focus.

Organised by the Indo Irish Cultural Society (IICS), which is based in County Wexford, the visit also provided Cllr Fleming with an opportunity to try out some yoga for himself. 'He struggled a bit but a lot of people do at the start. You're using muscles you haven't used since you were a child. He gave it a go though,' said Tania.

There are an estimated 800 Indian people living and working in Wexford, and in the wake of Mr Kumar's visit, Tania said she planned to keep in touch with members of the IICS. 'I didn't realise we had such a big Indian community around us. They plan to be more visible in the community and have asked me to join their association.'
