Kathleen was a self sufficient woman and devoted mother
The death occurred recently of Kathleen McGrath, late of Coolback, New Ross.
Born Kathleen Cummins on January 21, 1937, Kathleen was one of 13 children to Peter and Bridget Cummins. She attended school in Ballykelly before going on to further her studies in Ramsgrange.
Cooking was Kathleen's main passion and she went on to cook in different schools, including in Newbridge and in St Pat's in Waterford and at a hospital in Kilkenny.
She met Denis McGrath at a dance in Adamstown Hall and they were married in 1964. The happy couple settled in Coolback, where Denis's four brothers resided at the time, before moving out.
Kathleen and Denis had four children, Pat, Margaret, PJ and Ann in what was always a busy household. Kathleen kept pigs and hens and was very industrious, making her own butter and bread. Her Christmas puddings and cakes were legendary.
Everyone knew Kathleen as a lady who was very quiet, gentle and considerate. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers, and always maintained a great interest in farming, working alongside Patrick.
Sadly Denis began suffering from ill health in 1981 so Kathleen increasingly helped out in running the farm. Denis's death at a young age in 1992 came as a huge blow to Kathleen and all of the family, so Kathleen took over running the farm more and more. She always kept the yard and house spotless and was very house proud. For Kathleen everything had to be done right.
She had good health until recent years and was cared for at New Ross Community Hospital, whose staff were fantastic to her.
She passed away peacefully in their love and care on August 4 aged 82.
She had nine grandchildren with whom she was very close, feeding them hearty, tasty dishes every chance she got.
A woman of deep faith, Kathleen attended Mass regularly and was very devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
She loved watching hurling on the TV or listening to matches on the radio.
A large crowd attended Kathleen's funeral Mass at St. Anne's Church, Rathgarogue and she was laid to rest afterwards beside Denis in the adjoining cemetery.
Kathleen was predeceased by her loving husband Denis; brother Lory; sisters Breda and Sarah; daughter-in-law Siobhán.
She is sadly missed by her loving sons Patrick and P.J.; daughters Margaret and Ann; brother, Tom; sisters Anna, Eileen, Mary, Philomena, Geraldine, Bernie, Epie and Margaret; grandchildren Padraig, Denise, Jack, Cora, Luke, Niall, Peter, Bobby and Charlie; daughter-in-law Eileen; son-in-law Seamus; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces; extended family and friends.
May her gentle soul Rest In Peace.
