Close shave for New Ross pipers
Chests, legs and faces were shaved on a very Good Friday for New Ross & District Pipe Band at JD North's pub when well in excess of €2,000 was raised for the band.
Several local men, including band members, put their body hair on the line (well most of it) for the cause, namely to help meet some of the costs associated with the band's upcoming trips to Virginia, USA, Belfast and Scotland. With Billy Bennett in charge of the beard, chest and moustache shaving and Chloe Quinn making sure the men's legs were silky smooth, everything went off without well.
Brian MacMahon, who has been a band member for more than 40 years, said: 'There was no bloodshed, but there were a few tears (of laughter).'
Cheered on by a crowd, the volunteers got a new clean cut look for their effors.
Dylan Roche had his chest, legs and beard shaved, while Diarmuid Butler opted for the bare chested look.
Clifford Roche, Brian MacMahon and Marty Ronan all had their beards or moustaches shaved, while Paul Power will be growing his beard for another few weeks before it gets the chop in Virginia, where the New Ross & District Pipe Band will be performing at a tattoo band festival.
Brian said: 'There was great hilarity and everyone had a good night. We have raised between €2,000 and €3,000 and we want to thank everyone fo supporting us.'
The band are performing in Belfast in June, in Scotland in August and at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France.
The band also have the All Ireland Championships to look forward to in New Ross on the first weekend of July.
