Over-35s Soccer

We really had a full house last weekend when 20 players plus Buddy took to the pitch in Grantstown on the evening of Saturday, August 24. The younger fitter team looked like they were having a stroll with the scoreline standing at 4-1 mid way through the second. They had the extra player too which possibly made all the difference but their play maker in Jim B had to leave with 15 minutes still to go and with the now even numbers, the balance shifted immediately. What a difference it made with the game finally ending in a 4-4 draw. It was a good game all round with a lot of wet but satisfied bibs leaving the field after a tough game where the never say die attitude came to the fore again.

If you want to get involved, the games usually take place on Saturday evening indoor in Grantstown at 6 p.m. So if you fancy coming along, please be there 15 minutes beforehand so we can kick off on time. Further information can be got by giving Dave a shout either by text or a call to 086 8596627 - he'll be delighted to hear from you.

Predeceased by his wife Bridie, Mikey will be sadly missed by his children and sincere condolences to Helen, Kathleen, Margaret, Michael and Bridget, his extended family and his many friends and neighbours. A hugely popular member of the local community, the large crowds that attended his funeral in Gusserane illustrated the esteem in which he was held. Ní bheidh a leithead arís ann.

Plans are at an advanced stage for the unveiling of a monument at Kinnagh graveyard on September 15 in memory of the three airmen who lost their lives in an air crash in September 1943. Their plane crashed in a field near Kinnagh Cross and the New Line. It burst in to flames with the loss of all three lives on board. The three World War II soldiers were from Canada, Wales and Scotland.

Now, after seventy six years, locals believe it is time to mark their sad passing. The names of all airmen who lost their lives over the skies of Wexford during World War II will also be inscribed on this monument. More information will be published in the local papers closer to the date of unveiling. For further information on this commemoration, contact Seán Egan at 087 9687092 or Billy Downes at 086 0771029.
