AS Dayle Rooney turned to celebrate with the home supporters after scoring Drogheda United’s spectacular lead goal, it was with a mixture of joy and relief.

Second only to Gary Deegan in terms of minutes played this season, Rooney has featured in every match bar one and has enjoyed far more game time than any of the Boynesiders’ other attacking players. Yet prior to last Friday night he’d scored only one goal, that against Tim Clancy’s St Pat’s in Richmond Park back in May.
