With such lethal forward power, St Kevin’s may be more than dark horses for this year’s senior championship title after putting Clan na Gael to the sword in Kilkerley on Sunday with a ruthless third quarter performance.

Clans, having won the 2020 Division 2 crown, led an entertaining contest by a point at half-time and moved two in front when Ciara Woods converted a free early in the second period. However, Kevin’s subsequently launched their decisive burst, shooting 2-6 unanswered before the waterbreak, with the Maguire sisters and Mia Duffy running riot.

Having levelled at 1-6 apiece, Aisling Maguire made no mistake with her first major and having beaten tight-marking Ife Enyoazu – who is a defender the incoming Louth management would be wise to take a look at – to a loose ball, Maguire confidently stroked away the penalty kick, all but ending the affair as a contest.

The opening period, during which Clans were breeze aided, began with a Pamela Campbell goal as the Ecco Road outfit moved 1-1 to no-score in front, but, in a flowing first half, Kevin’s responded with a Duffy major after great work by energetic Katie Doheny.

Róisín Maguire and Susan Byrne frees had the mid-Louth outfit – who won all five of their league matches before Sunday – ahead, though Grace Smith, Woods, Denise McKenna and Shannen McLaughlin chipped in with points as Clans held a slender interval cushion.

However, Kevins’ power play was decisive as while a 1-1 salvo by county forward Woods reduced their deficit to six points, Danielle Brennan capped a memorable occasion for the victors with a late drive to the net.

Kevin’s face champions Geraldines in the opening round of the championship on Sunday – on this evidence, the holders will need to bring their A-game.
