Word has just reached the news desk about an exciting sequence of gigs taking place in McHugh’s Beer Garden on the Chord Road during Sunday afternoons in September and October. The series will be known as the Seagull Sessions in honour of our esteemed avian guests who have descended on the town in vast numbers of late and added greatly to the gaiety and wellbeing of Drogheda - not!
First up this Sunday September 18th, those local Thin Lizzy loving renegades, Bad Reputation, make one of their increasingly rare appearances. Featuring the almighty Drawda axe maestro, Flash, who paid his Lynott dues over 5 storming years on the road in Ireland, UK and Europe with Thin Az Lizzy, the band also features the blistering guitar talent of Col McSherry, ace of bass and Meathworks Fan Club president, Kieran McDonnell, with top local skinsman, Jimmy Brennan, deputising on drums. Bad Reputation have consolidated a cult reputation of their own with the Lizzy faithful over the years, including headlining the legendary 4th of January Vibe for Philo at Vicar Street in 2014 and also flying out to Eindhoven in the Netherlands to play the top spot at the international Remembering Phil Lynott and Gary Moore event in 2013. Expect all the old favourites played with customary Flash relish!
And on Sunday September 25th, more welcome news that Slippery When Wet, currently Ireland’s #1 Bon Jovi tribute act, return to the town after an absence of a couple of years to administer some ‘Bad Medicine’ to those who have managed to ‘Keep the Faith’ since their last visit to Drogheda. The boys performed twice at the Barrel a few years ago and made a strong impression before a very good attendance. After that, they went on to tour the country, and, fresh from a recent triumphant, post-Lockdown return, Slippery When Wet are now riding a ‘Blaze of Glory’ as Ireland's top Bon Jovi tributeers. Fronted by the legendary Col Bon Jovi who has seen service in such well-regarded bands as Winter’s Reign and as lead singer with cover specialists ‘Dead Ringer’, the rest of the band boasts a legacy which includes such fondly remembered acts as The Rock Monsters, Mr Nice Guy, Rock of Ages and various diverse tribute acts, too numerous to mention!
More events will be announced soon and there is no cover charge for the Sunday afternoon Seagull Sessions. Weather permitting, all gigs will take place in McHugh’s Beer Garden between 5pm and 8pm. If inclement conditions do arrive, then the shows will be moved inside the Barrel venue, so as the fella said, it’ll be “concert - rain or shine!” ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?!!
