One of Drogheda’s most beloved sons Jimmy Weldon has died at the age of 69.

The well-known photographer bravely battled a short illness, and passed away peacefully on Thursday morning in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in the care of his loving wife Catriona.

Over the past three decades, Jimmy was a familiar sight on the streets of our town, his camera forever slung over his shoulder, ready to catch a smile.

If there was a wedding, 21st, communion, first day of school; it just wasn’t the same without Jimmy capturing those precious moments forever.

His wonderful books are a wealth of local characters, immortalised in their most natural environments.

Yet he has also been on hand to chronicle historic moments in our country, with some of the world’s most famous people.

A wonderful character, with a heart of gold, he was a treasured asset to the Drogheda Independent over the years.

The award-winning photographer Destin Sparks said: ‘Photography is the art of making memories tangible’ and if that is true, thanks to Jimmy Weldon, nothing will ever be forgotten in Drogheda.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
