Feile na Tana takes place this year on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th February and once again the event now in it’s eight year will be online due to the pandemic.The festival celebrates the very best of Irish traditional music, song and dance.

Workshops are available at a reduced on-line price of €20/£17 for 2022. Private links to the workshops will be sent to each participant on Saturday 5th February before 2pm.

Available workshops are: Fiddle advanced, Bríd Harper; Fiddle intermediate, Zoë Conway; Whistle advanced, Mary Bergin; Whistle intermediate, Des Cafferkey; Uilleann Pipes, Mick O’Brien; Harp, Cormac De Barra; Flute, Kevin Crawford; Accordion [C/D Box], Máirtín Ó Connor; Concertina, Caitlín Nic Gabhann; Singing, Julie Fowlis; Banjo, Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor; Bodhrán, Jim Higgins; Guitar, John McIntyre; Bouzouki, Eamon Doorley; Sean nós dancing, Edwina Guckian.

Each of our world-renowned tutors has prepared a video workshop specially for Féile na Tána with a mix of chat about technique, ornamentation, and some tunes to keep you busy!

The workshops are between 30 and 45 minutes long and have been pre-recorded and edited. You will be able to access the video for 1 month, and can start and stop at the touch of a button. Students can also use the slower speed button in YouTube to assist learning if required.

Census enumerators wanted in Cooley Peninsula area

The next census will take place on 3 April and the Central Statistics Office (CSO) is looking to employ census enumerators to deliver and collect census forms in your area.
The nationwide recruitment drive is now closed but applications are still being taken for specific areas including Cooley Peninsula. Online applications only will be accepted.
Enumerators can earn up to €3,200 for 10 weeks’ part-time work, between 28 February and 06 May 2022. The job is highly flexible, requiring approximately 22 hours per week, but with the ability to largely choose your own hours. Training is provided and there is lots of support available from your field supervisor and other enumerators in the adjoining areas.

Red Cross AGM

Carlingford/Omeath Red Cross are holding their AGM on Tuesday 1st February at 8 pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Cooley.

We have not been able to hold our socials in recent times due to Covid Restrictions but have been very busy providing transport to hospital appointments for people throughout North Leinster. We are always looking for new members particularly drivers and would extend an invitation to everyone to come along to the AGM and find out about the work done by your local Red Cross.

Advent Sleep Out at Bush Raises Over €107,000.

The recent Advent Sleep Out that took place in Cooley Parish at Bush Bridge throughout the month of December raised over €107,000 for the Peter McVerry Trust.

Sincere thanks to all families and organisations who hosted throughout the sleep out and to everyone for your generous support of the Fr. Peter McVerry Trust. A presentation to Fr. Peter McVerry will take place at the Bridge at Bush on Saturday 5th February at 8.00pm and all are welcome.

Basketball returns to Cooley Complex

Basketball returns to the Cooley Complex this week under the guidance of international coach, Brendan McCoy.

There are set times for the different age groups and they are as follows; 6–7pm boys and girls born 2011, 2012, 2013; 7–8pm boys and girls born 2008, 2009 and 2010; 8–9pm boys and girls born 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; 9–10pm ladies and gents adult basketball.

The sessions started on Monday night last and will continue every Monday night.

Kickhams Looking for Volunteers for ‘All Stars’

Ahead of the 2022 All Stars season Cooley Kickhams are looking for more volunteers.

Cooley Zoom Bingo in St. Mary’s Hall

Cooley Zoom Bingo takes place every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Cooley.

Anyone wishing to join in the event can buy their Bingo Book (5page book) for €6 at Cooley Parochial Hall on the previous Monday from 7pm – 8pm (with Covid-19 guidelines in place) for the Zoom Bingo which will be held on this Wednesday 26th January at 7.30pm. New Bellurgan United Blotto Jackpot €2,300

The first draw under the new 28 number format took place at Bellurgan United last Tuesday, January 18.

The following are the Results. The numbers drawn were 5, 14, 19, 24, but there were no jackpot winners. The Cuchulainn Gaels lotto draw took place on Wednesday night last, January 19. The jackpot on offer was €10,700 but the four numbers drawn, 3, 10, 14, and 16 were not matched. There were no ‘match three’ winners and the five Lucky Dip winners were F. McKeown, J. O’Hagan, A. O’Hagan, R. and D. Caraher, T. Hollywood. They share the €100 prize. The jackpot for the next draw which takes place on Wednesday January 26 is €10,800. Thank you for your support a always!

The Cooley Kickhams lotto draw took place on Monday night last, January 17, with a jackpot of €11,400. The numbers drawn, 5, 22, 28 and 32, did not produce a jackpot winner. There werethree ‘match three’ winners; Robert Duffy c/o Brian Rafferty; Katie Schuls c/o Jamie Farrell; Ger long c/o online. They each receive €35. The jackpot for this week’s draw is €11,600.

The numbers will be drawn live on Facebook just after 9pm each Monday night. The lotto committee will then check the numbers and the results will be published on Facebook and via WhatsApp.

Universal Synod Group Meeting

The Carlingford/Omeath Parish Pastoral Council will be hosting a Universal Synod Group Meeting on Monday 31st January at 7.00pm in St. Michael’s Parish Hall. The meeting which is open to everyone in the parish will adhere to strict Covid guidelines and will allow for parishioners to complete the Universal Synod Questions. Special invitation to parish groups – Ministers of the Word, Ministers of the Eucharist, Cleaners and Stewards.

Four Day Trip to Galway

A four day trip from the Cooley Peninsula and North Louth area has been organised around the St. Patrick’s holiday to the West of Ireland.

The travelling group will leave the area on Tuesday March 15 and return on Friday March 18. They will stay in the popular Galway Bay Hotel. The St. Patrick’s GFC lotto draw took place on Thursday night last, January 20, for a jackpot of €7,200. The numbers drawn, 5, 9, 22, 25 did not however produce a jackpot winner. There were two ‘match three’ winners; Maire Oliver, Earlsquarter, c/o Liam Oliver, and John Loughran, Drumnasilla, c/o Crilly’s Shop. They share the €100. This week’s jackpot is €7,400 and the draw takes place on Thursday January 20.

Dates for Cul Camps

The Louth GAA Cul camp dates were confirmed this week and the peninsula clubs are involved throughout the Summer months.

The camp at Lordship for St. Patricks GFC takes place from Monday July 4 until Friday July 8. Cuchulainn Gaels in Omeath follow in August, from Monday August 8 until Friday August 12. The Cooley Kickhams camp is on the following week, Monday August 15 until Friday August 20.

Appeal for Data Projector for St. Laurence’s Church

Fr. Christy McElwee is appealing for financial support for a data projector in St. Laurence’s Church, Omeath, as the current data projector is no longer working.

The projector has been a great asset to Sunday Liturgy, Weddings and Funerals in our church. Please support generously. Envelopes can be marked ‘Projector Omeath’ and put in the collection basket or handed into the Parochial House, Omeath.
