“Beware the `Devil`s Bread`

With an increase in the weather temperature in recent weeks, along with some pretty heavy rain, the weeds are springing up like there is no tomorrow. The annual high-growing weed of Hemlock, known as the `Devil`s Bread` is currently flourishing along all rural roads and it is this particular weed that hampers your view on these smaller country routes. Whether you are out walking, cycling, jogging, on horseback or driving any type of vehicle, it can be difficult to see the road ahead when the `Devil`s Bread` is in full bloom. This particular weed is also poisonous and it should not be touched, especially the floral white head and children out playing should be forewarned to keep clear of this plant.

Know Your Parish

The following is taken from a book titled, `Leaves of History`, which was written by Stamullen Parish Curate, Father Paul Walsh in 1930. `In the townland of Tullog, Ordnance Survey sheet 34, there was in ancient times a chapel of ease belonging to the parish of Stamullen. There is no mention of it in literature before the years 1682-85 when Dopping compiled his Liber Ecclesiarum, but it must have been existing in pre-Reformation times, because the first Protestants didn’t build churches or chapels in the Irish countryside; their business appears rather to have been to allow them to fall. Bishop Dopping has three notices of the place including the following “ Tullock is a chapel of ease belonging to ye church of Stamolin but without curate or maintenance, east of Drogheda and not valued in ye King’s books, church has been ruined since 1641”. The only portion of the chapel of Tullog now remaining in position is a small portion of a single wall, apparently the north side, five or six yards in length and about two feet above ground level. It is remembered in the district that the building was that of a chapel. A stone which formed the heading of one of the windows of the chapel is now inserted over the entrance to a holy well, situated close to the chapel ruins on the opposite side of the road`.
