The following message came out on the Broomfield Text Alert on Thursday last, 28th July. “A mugging took place in Starinagh last night (Wednesday) at 9.15pm. A grey golf reg. 08LH327*, two males, one, stocky driver and the attacker was slim build with baseball cap and hoodie and covid mask. Please let the Gardai know if seen in the area”. Community Members should take this incident with the seriousness that it deserves. One of our own female Community Members was subjected to this mugging, and like all other criminal activity and incidents of concern reported over the years, is to be condemned outright, without reservation. The attacker eventually made off with the ladies handbag, which is red in colour. If you are out walking, keep an eye out for this bag which may have been dis-carded somewhere along the roadway. Please make Community Alert a priority, because, as stated before, criminals never take a break. While hardworking decent people are going about their business, these criminals and thugs are exploring every opportunity to make a hit. The Gardai for the most part are doing their best. Unfortunately, in many instances, when criminals are caught, their punishment falls well short of what should fit the crime. Many of these criminals have made criminality a career choice, and are repeat offenders multiple times. They need to be stopped in their tracks and dealt with, with a heavy hand. People have a right to be safe and feel safe, everywhere, but particularly on their own property. The lady in question was on her own property! The Broomfield and District Text Alert number is 086 2193103, if you are a Resident of Broomfield and District, please make sure that you are registered with the Community Text Alert. Please keep checking the Personal Monitored Alarms.

The Association would like to hear from Community Members who would be willing to take part in Training/ Re-training in the use of a Defibrillator, and also to take part in Digital Literacy Training. Training will take place in Teach Raithneach when numbers willing to participate are established. Please contact the Secretary on 087 2729154 if interested. There has been some interest expressed already, but just not enough yet to set up either of the training programmes mentioned. The Question, should children have defibrillator training?, is often asked. Training in the techniques of basic life support (BLS) has been standard practice for school children in many European countries (e.g. Germany, Denmark and Italy) and in many US states for several years. Norway made the subject a compulsory part of the curriculum in all schools as long ago as 1961.

Tidy Towns

Judging is ongoing for the Litter League and Louth Looking Good. Thanks to everyone who is helping with litter picking. We really appreciate your efforts and would appeal to all local housing estates and residents to keep areas litter and weed free. Let’s keep working together to keep Monasterboice looking its best.

Monasterboice Patron

The third of three Monasterboice Blessing of the Graves will happen, as usual, next Sunday, the first Sunday in August. However, the actual starting time of the event is anything but usual. Please take note if you intend going to, or indeed doing the auld “finishing touches” to the graves on the Sunday morning, in preparation for the ceremony at the hitherto customary evening slot. This year, the Patron will take place at 12 noon and, due to Covid, it’ll be the first freely attended one in three years, so a huge crowd is anticipated.
