Vandalism in the Garden

Julianstown & District Community Association were most disappointed to find that our Community Garden was the subject of vandalism on the evening of Monday 30th August. Some persons had come along a lit a bonfire in the middle of one of the large circles and threw all of the children’s toys into the bushes, breaking some of them. It was doubly disappointing as the judges for the An Taisce Green Flag Award was calling to judge the garden the following morning. The Gardaí have been informed and will be keeping a close eye on the garden. We would ask the public to keep a watch on the garden when passing by. This is a fabulous facility for Julianstown but also for the whole of East Meath. There has been so much use made of the garden during the Covid-19 lockdown for birthday parties, parents with young children, and friends meeting each other; it would be a real shame if this were to become a habit.

Our committee started to create this garden in 2007 and it was the late Clare McEnaney who designed it. Meath Co. Co. owns this three-acre site and we have developed it into what can only be described as a ‘secret garden’. You approach it from the small car park on the north side of the village, walk down a tree lined avenue of native trees, with lots of herbaceous planting, and a pond full of wildlife. You then come to a Contorted Willow and once you go around this the garden opens up with 6 large circles, 12 large flower beds, seating and then on to a patio area with orchard, soft fruit bushes and herb bed. It is well worth a visit, and you can bring a picnic, sit back and relax. Cllr. Geraldine Keogan has also offered some of her discretionary funding towards the repairs and this gesture is much appreciated.

Bridge Damaged

The bridge was left in a very dangerous condition after a traffic accident recently. Many thanks to Meath County Council for fixing the bridge so quickly.

St. Mary’s Church of Ireland

A word from Rev. Katharine Poulton - Looking ahead! The Harvest Thanksgiving will be held on Sunday 26th September. Because we are still not sure what restrictions will be in place then, there will be no gathering to decorate the church, but those who wish to bring an arrangement of fruit, flowers or other produce for a windowsill may do so on Saturday 25th between 2 and 3 pm. We will also gather items for Drogheda Homeless Aid; details of which will come later. Because of this there will be no charity collection in September but the loose collection on the day of the harvest will be divided between the parish and the Bishops Appeal for world development.

First Communion

First Communion Ceremonies will take place in October. St. Patrick’s NS – Saturday, 9th October. Whitecross NS – Saturday, 16th October. Please check Parish Bulletin for any updates.
