Recent deaths

There was profound shock and sadness following the sudden passing of Gary ‘Bomber’ Murphy, Monknewtown, who was a former player, coach and committee member of Rossin Rovers Soccer Club for many years. Gary was also a great Celtic supporter and a long time member of the St Margaret’s Celtic Supporters Club. He was predeceased by his father Jimmy and is mourned by his loving mother Mary, brother Michael, aunt Margaret, neighbours and friends to whom condolences is extended. Gary’s funeral Mass took place in Monknewtown Church with burial afterwards in St Erc’s Cemetery.

Sympathy is also extended to the family of the late Paddy O’Connor, Cruicetown, who died at St Mary’s Nursing Home, Castleblaney. Paddy was predeceased by his wife Joan just last February, and parents Farrell and Agnes. He is sadly missed by his children Audrey, Noel, Martin and Johanna, grandchildren, sisters Nora Barry (Garlow Cross), Mary McDwyer (Donaghmore), Joan Murtagh (Proudstown), brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Paddy’s funeral Mass took place in St Patrick’s Church, with burial afterwards in St Erc’s Cemetery.

Ras Tailteann

There was a great turn out to welcome the Ras Tailteann cycle race as it passed through the village on the fifth and final stage of this year’s race. The riders started out from Kinnegad and sped through Slane shortly after 1pm on their way through Collon and the finish in Blackrock, Co Louth. As well as around 160 cyclists there was a cavalcade of official and support vehicles, race officials, medical support and team cars. Great credit goes to local cycling fanatic Larry Clarke, himself a Ras Tailteann competitor and stage winner back in the 1970’s, who had the approach roads appropriately decorated and also at the square in the village to welcome the cyclists through. Larry went to great lengths to mark the occasion of the prestigious race travelling through Slane.
