Sean McDermott’s tractor draw

Well done to Collon Vehicle Dismantlers who have generously donated the fantastic 1st Prize in the Sean McDermott’s GAA club 75th year Jubilee vintage tractor draw.

The company is presently run by Gary Myles, whose father was a keen supporter and active committee member of the Sean’s.

The tractor - An International B250 has been in Gary’s family for many years, although it was not being used.

The restoration has given the tractor a new lease of life. Tickets are on sale now €10 for one or 3 for €20 . Tickets online - www.winavintagetractor.ie. Draw Date: Saturday 8th October

Its been a great year so far for the club and they are constantly working on the PR.

Last week was actually the 75th anniversary - August 1947 - of an informal meeting of three men at Cookstown cross that led to the formation of what came to be known as Sean McDermotts GFC.

Paddy Byrne , Paddy Murray and Joe Curran (all now rip) , felt that at that time , there were young men from the locality playing with other clubs. It was decided that perhaps they could form a club and team of their own.

Two weeks later a meeting in Stormanstown Hall was attended by 27 people , a committee was assembled …..and the rest as they say is history.

A team was affiliated and played its first match in early 1948.

Parochial House.

After years of deliberation, the Parish Finance Committe have decided, for a myriad of reasons, to upgrade and add a small extension to The Parochial House in Tenure, making it possible for Fr. Paddy to relocate from his present abode in Fieldstown. Thus, his new Tenure address would become The Parish Priest’s House.

The “reasons” I’ve alluded to, are part financial and totally practical and will be the first time, since Fr Walsh relocated to Fieldstown, that the PP’s House will be situated in Tenure.

Parishioners are invited to have a look at the proposed plans to both houses in question, in Fieldstown and Tenure churches and are encouraged to contact any committee member via the parish office, Parochial House, Harlington, Monasterboice A92RT66 or email monasterboiceparish2018@gmail.com

Community Buliding/Fund raising continues

Speaking about Parochial matters, the proposed Outdoor Cinema will happen on Saturday next, August 13th, on Tenure’s Church grounds. The metaphoric lights will go down and the equally metaphoric curtains will go up at 7.45 and..... fun fact coming up here.... the greatest film ever made, Shrek will be on show. Yeah, this absolute classic, coupled with nice weather and beautiful company will be the making of an unforgettable evening. Entry fee is €5 for individuals or €10 for families so, grab a blanket and chair and let’s go to the movies.

Also, The Car Boot Sale in Fieldstown, will happen again on August 22nd in the church carpark. €20 per car. Refreshments will be served as they will at Tenure’s flick night.

Poetry Night.

After a two year hiatus due to Covid, Monasterboice Tourism and Tidy Towns is delighted to hold it’s annual Evening of Poetry, Music & Song once again, on Friday Sept 2nd, in Drumshallon Forge Heritage Centre, from 8-10pm. Always a great night’s entertainment! Admission is free and there’ll be light refreshments served on the night. Do try and come along and you might be surprised by just how talented some of our local residents are. Also on the night, there’ll be a raffle held, with some great prizes

As part of Heritage Week, MT and TT will be holding an event on Saturday 20th August. More details anon.
