The best wishes of Broomfield and District Residents Association, and the Community is extended to all who are hospitalised or ill at this time. We wish you a speedy return to good health.

Pride of Place County Awards

Meath Co. Council’s POP County Awards too place last Thursday night 17th November in the Solstice Arts Centre, Navan. Broomfield and District were nominated in two categories following their success in the Municipal District Awards earlier. The categories were Heritage and Village/Townland.

Unfortunately, Broomfield and District were not in the winner’s enclosure on Thursday last. At county level the competition is always that bit stiffer. However, 2022 was a good year for the Association and Community in many respects. The foundations for further success have been put in place in 2022 on a number of fronts. A lot done, more to do! Aideen, Roisin, Linda and Josie represented the Association at the Pride of Place Awards and were fulsome in their praise for all aspects of the event.

Christmas Lights

The Christmas Lights Switching on Ceremony takes place at Teach Raithneach on Friday 2nd December 2022, starting at 7.30pm. Music and song on the night with Rose O’Brien, refreshments will be served. There will be a prize for the child wearing the best Christmas Outfit, and there may be a few more surprises in store. All Community Members are cordially invited to attend.

Community Alert

Considering that there are 220 Community Members signed up to the Broomfield and District Text Alert System, the Community/Text Alert meeting held on Wednesday night last, 16th November was disappointing in terms of attendance. However, the meeting was warmly welcomed by those who did attend. Garda Sgt. Jennifer O’Brien and Garda Liam Hennessy, Slane Garda Station were in attendance, both providing very useful information and advice. There was no shortage of opinions on what needs to be done to make Broomfield and District a better place to live, work, and play. Some of the issues highlighted at the meeting were: the lengths and cost to which homeowners have to go to make their homes safe, the number of criminals who are repeat offenders, the free legal aid system availed of over and over again by repeat offenders, the derisory sentences being handed down to criminals, CCTV, signage and many other issues. New figures show that Meath remains the county with the least number of Gardaí per head of population.

There is currently one member of the force for every 668 people in the county, well above the national average of one Garda for every 427 people. Is it any wonder the criminals are having a field day in Meath. Criminals have easy access to four motorways running through the county, so can be gone in a flash. Please be reminded that the Text Alert System is a FREE and available to all Community Members. It is run on a purely Voluntary basis by three local Volunteers who have shown dedication and commitment to providing this service for quite a number of years now. The Text Alert System proved invaluable during Covid-19 lockdowns in particular. Death Notices/Guards of Honour and other vital Community Notices were disseminated by Text Alert during that period. Please support Community Text Alert in whatever way you can. It would be very helpful and greatly appreciated if a few more people came forward to help, the already mentioned three Volunteers, with sending out the Texts. Meanwhile, the Gardai are appealing to all car and van owners to lock and secure their vehicles when parked overnight after a spate of thefts recently. Gardai have seen an increase in thefts from parked vehicles in Meath and Louth. They are also targeting parked campervans along with trailers.

The Broomfield and District Text Alert number is 086 2193103. Remember, if you want Garda assistance, the quickest way to get it is to dial 999 or 112! Again, if someone you know has a Socially Monitored Alarm, please make sure it is working. To check, press the pendant, the Monitoring Station will answer within seconds, tell them you are carrying out a check, they will be delighted to hear from you and will confirm that the alarm is working. It’s that simple. Also, remember to Light Up and Lock Up!

Christmas Fair returns

If interested, please contact Mary on 0872651851, or Alice on 0879360018. After an absence of two years, the Christmas Fair’s return is a welcome one.
