Farewell to popular matron of Our Lady of Lourdes Sr Elizabeth RIP
The later Sr Elizabeth Dooley MMM was a popular matron in the Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
The MMM community, and her many former colleagues in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. are mourning the loss of Sr. Elizabeth Dooley, who passed away recently following a short illness.
Sr Elizabeth, originally from Waterford, was already a qualified nurse and midwife when she joined MMM in 1955. Sr. Elizabeth went to Nigeria in 1959 and worked in Anua, at St. Luke’s Hospital, for ten years. As she was working as Deputy Matron and her talents in nursing administration were recognised, she was released for further updating in Scotland. In 1970 she was appointed Director of Nursing back in Drogheda, a post she held for twelve years. After a short period in Airmount Hospital, Waterford, she returned to Drogheda as Secretary Manager for a further six years.
In 1993, Sr. Elizabeth went to Kenya for fourteen years where she worked in the Medical Department of the Kenyan Catholic secretariat and was in MMM leadership. She finished her time in Kenya as Diocesan Health Coordinator in Kitale. On her return to Ireland, she took up residence in KIlmacow, a residence for the care of the elderly, until MMM withdrew in 2012. She then came to live in Artane, Dublin, until her transfer to Aras Mhuire for extra care in December 2018. Sr. Elizabeth died peacefully on 06 May 2023 in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
