Times Past 1870

The annual ploughing match of the Abbeydorney and Tralee ploughing society took place on Wednesday 8th February, at the Rev. Henry Denny’s farm, at Churchill, and was very successful. The following is the Prize List: - 1st - William Todd, (Ploughman Denis Buckley, Abbeydorney ). 2nd - Thomas Roche, Abbeydorney . 3rd - Daniel Sheehan, (Ploughman W. Murphy Abbeydorney ). 4th - Denis Costello, Abbeydorney. 5th - William Sheehan, Abbeydorney. Highly Commended, John Leslie, Abbeydorney . Dinner: The members and friends sat down together in the evening to an excellent dinner, provided by Mrs Burke of the Spa.

The cloth having been removed, The Chairman said the first toast he had to propose, was to the health of ‘her gracious Majesty the Queen’; They all knew about her. There never was so constitutional a Sovereign. In times past, Sovereigns interfered with their statesmen in the Government of the country, but such a charge could not be laid against their present Queen. The toast was received with all honours. The Chairman said the next toast was the health of the ‘Prince and Princess of Wales, and the rest of the royal family’. It was received with cheers. The Chairman said their next toast was ‘Success to the Abbeydorney and Tralee Ploughing Society’; He thought the Society was going on most prosperously, and was successful, as it is. The exhibition of the day was all that any person could desire.
