Templenoe 2-12; Austin Stacks 1-8. Our trip to the Legion pitch in Derreen on a glorious Sunday afternoon (7th August) did not go the way we would have liked. When these two sides last met it was in the semi-final of last year’s competition and we had a comfortable win that day in Connolly Park (3-9 to 0-4). Templenoe reversed the situation on this occasion with a very polished display all through.
We had a good start when Greg Horan won the throw-in and was fouled as he raced up the pitch with the resultant free put over from distance by David Mannix after just 40 seconds. Templenoe then put over the next three points inside the 6th minute before a well-taken goal by Jack O’Shea in the 8th minute restored our lead. Two more points by the opposition and a 15th minute pointed free by David Mannix left the sides level (1-2 to 0-5) at the end of the first quarter. Templenoe, however, dominated the second quarter, keeping us scoreless, while adding a goal and four points to their tally which left them seven points ahead at the break (1-9 to1-2).
Two more David Mannix points in the opening six minutes of the second half gave us some hope but a second goal by the opposition in the 40th minute put them on the road to victory and even though we out-scored them for the remainder of the game by four points to three the damage had been done by that second goal. Our four points came from four different players frees by David Mannix and Sean Quilter and one each from play by Jack O’Shea and Gearóid Fitzgerald.
Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Jack O’Shea (1-1), Niall Fitzmaurice, Conor Jordan, Paul O’Sullivan, Joe O’Connor, Greg Horan, Michael O’Donnell (Capt), Shane O’Callaghan, Michael O’Gara, Seán Quilter (0-1 free), Gearóid Fitzgerald (0-1), David Mannix (0-5 four frees).
Subs used: Conor Horan (ht), Adam Curran (ht), Eoghan Carroll (41m), Cian Purcell (45m), Jordan Kissane (45m).
The other game in our Group between Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr. Crokes, played in Castleisland, ended in a good win for the Strand Road boys (0-23 to 1-16) and we have a home game against O’Rahillys in round 2 on Sunday next (14th Aug) at 2.30pm.
North Kerry 0-12; Austin Stacks 0-11. This Co. Championship quarter final encounter at Castleisland on this Monday evening (8th August) saw a brilliant from both sides with our boys just coming up short against a 16 Club North Kerry side. See Club Website for details.

Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of the following who died recently: Seán Seosamh Ó’Conchubhair, Naomh Iosaf, Oakpark and formerly Baltovin (father of Brian, former Club Hurler and member of our Scór team); Hannah Fitzgerald (nee Hurley), Spa Road and formerly Cromane; William Fitzgerald, Cahermoneen and formerly London; Paddy Garvey, St. Brendan’s Park and formerly Charleville;
And everyone in GAA circles and elsewhere will be saddened at the tragic death last Friday evening of the Tipperary SH player, Dillon Quirke while playing with his Club Clonoulty-Rossmore in Semple Stadium. Dillon was aged 24. And what a tragic coincidence with our own Club. Exactly 60 years ago this year we witnessed to same tragic incidence when Moss Slattery (also aged 24 at the time) died while playing a SF game in Castleisland.
