A SPLENDID 39/1 double for Ms Ide Barrett, of Causeway, and a run of 29.15 on going rated .40 slow by the Michael Baker-trained Denville Paudie were the highlights at last week’s Tuesday SIS meeting at the Oakview venue.

Ms Barrett’s double was initiated in the first race (A5 525) by 4/1 shot, Weight And Sea, which won by two lengths from Toremore Missile in an estimated 29.58, and she immediately followed up by winning the second race (A4 525) in an estimated 29.40 with 7/1 shot, Schemozzle, which hit the line half a length ahead of Phils Jet.

Both ran from trap 6, being the only wide seeds, and trap 6 supplied four of the first six winners, with the other two winners running from trap 5. A good night to be on the outside, in other words.

The fifth race (A1 525) saw Denville Paudie, one of the trap 5 winners, become the only greyhound to get inside 29.00 seconds on estimated time, which was 28.75. He disputed with Its About Time on the back straight before impressively taking control and winning by five lengths from the strong-finishing Baltovin Jack, bringing his career earnings to €2,190 for Duagh owner, Liam Dennehy.

THE finalists in the two Derbies, two Oaks and two Champion Stakes at the national coursing meeting in Clonmel next month, will be competing for huge prize money of €240,500.

The meeting starts on Friday, February 4, and will conclude on Monday, February 7. On day one, proceedings will open with the first round of the 2021/ 22 Oaks and, after the interval, the first round of the 2021/ 22 Derby and the second round of the 2021/ 22 Oaks will be run off.

Day 2 will focus on the first and second rounds of the 2021/ 22 Oaks and the first round of the 2020/ 21 Derby. That will clear things nicely for the concluding two days and a great boost for the meeting, especially in relation to attendance, has been the significant lifting of Covid restrictions.

Just wondering how much of all that great loll will be coming to Kerry?

HOW about this: A 7/2 winner at Tralee Track on Friday night, O’Learys Rocket, paid €111.50 to a €1 win bet on the tote. You don’t have to be a serious punter to enjoy your racing at the Oakview venue . . . and imagine the thrill of collecting €111.50 for a €1 bet. No chance of that ever happening in horseracing, is there?
